East Road Intersection is on the boundary of Hocking and Pearsall and is one of the major entry and exit points for Hocking and Pearsall residents. Advocacy to take action on this project started as far back in 2004 but as time has gone on we have had the upgrade of the Ocean Reef Road overpass and more developments in the local area.
I have restarted this advocacy as I have been contacted by many residents and local businesses in the area. I tabled a motion on notice at the Ordinary Council Meeting in May 2022 to consider the traffic safety issues and an upgrade of the intersection.
I am proud to say with thanks of Local Member Margaret Quirk and Shadow Minister for Road Safety Martin Aldridge this project wouldn't have been successful. This commitment has now been delivered with design and construction in the pipeline.
LATEST UPDATES (SEP 2024)
- The State Government released the 2024-25 State Black Spot Program and Safer Roads Program in a media release. The Wanneroo Road - East Road (City of Wanneroo) Intersection safety improvements was successful in receiving some funding to undertake design. This will be a staged project with construction in future years to follow.
HISTORIC UPDATES
- In October 2023, the Minister for Transport has written back to confirm: "I am advised that Main Roads is currently undertaking design investigations in response to a Public Transport Authority request to improve sight lines at this intersection, which are impacting bus and general traffic turning movements from East Road into Wanneroo Road northbound. This work will also investigate and consider the concerns raised in the petition. Main Roads is preparing documentation to nominate this intersection for funding as part of the Black Spot Program."
- I tabled a petition to the Western Australian Parliament to bring forward black spot funding and upgrades. The petition received a total number of 1,172 signatures which can be viewed here: VIEW THE PETITION
